제이슨황: 안녕하세요. 만나서 반갑습니다. KBC 멤버분들께 간단한 소개 부탁 드리겠습니다.

안상호: 안녕하세요. 저는 UC. Berkeley에서 경제학을 전공하고, LA에서 신문기자로 근무를 하다가, 올해 초까지 금융회사에서 펀드매니저로 근무하다 퇴사하고, 현재 지인들과 스타트업을 준비하고 서비스를 진행 중에 있습니다.

제이슨황: 말씀을 들어보니, 이력이 다양하신 것 같은데, 좀 더 구체적으로 말씀을 부탁 드리겠습니다.

안상호: 한국에서 고려대학교를 다니다가 중간에 자퇴를 하고 다시 UC.Berkeley에 입학했습니다. 한국에서는 이공계였는데, 금융업에서 일하고 싶어 경제학과 금융을 위주로 학업을 했습니다.

제이슨황: 금융은 미국이 선진국인데 왜 한국으로 들어오셨나요?

안상호: 제가 졸업한 시기가 리만브라더스 금융위기가 터진 직후였습니다. 미국 내에 금융관련 포지션은 취소되거나 해고를 하던 시기라서 취업이 거의 불가능한 시기였습니다. 그래서 상대적으로 피해를 덜 입은 한국으로 들어오기로 결정한 것입니다.

제이슨황: 펀드매니저의 일은 어떠셨나요?

안상호: 저는 주니어 급이어서 투자결정에 대한 Final Call 권한은 없었습니다. 하지만 일반적으로 선임매니저들은 애널리스트들의 추천과 자체적인 시스템으로 걸러진 회사들에 대해 기업탐방을 하고, 기업탐방에서의 정성적인 판단과 기업 Valuation 측정을 통한 정량적인 판단을 동시에 고려하여 투자를 결정합니다.  

제이슨황: 회사의 가치는 어떤 식으로 매기는 가요?

안상호: 너무나 다양한 방법들이 있어서 단정지어 말하기가 어렵습니다. 산업, 성장가능성 등에 따라서 다양한 Valuation tool이 사용됩니다. 그 중에서도 미래의 수입과 지출 가치를 현재의 가치로 산정하여 계산하는 DCF라는 tool을 일반적으로 많이 사용합니다.

제이슨황: 그런데 왜 갑자기 회사를 관두시고 스타트업을 하시는 건가요?

안상호: 여러 가지 이유가 있지만 저의 동기는 2가지가 가장 큰 것 같습니다. 첫째는 금융인으로서의 회의감이 있었습니다. 펀드매니저로 근무를 하다 보면 많은 기업가 분들과 실무자들을 만나 투자에 대한 의견을 주고받습니다. 기업과 투자자는 근본적으로 입장이 틀리기 때문에 이견이 많을 수 밖에 없겠지만, 투자자로서의 저의 시각에 대한 의구심이 들었습니다. 실제로 현장 업무도 해본 적도 없고, 기업도 꾸려본 적이 없는 제가 책상에 앉아 분석한 재무제표와 각종 지표로 매긴 기업의 가치라는 것이 허구인 것 같다는 회의감이 들었습니다. 그리고 기업가 분들에 대한 동경심과 부러움도 있었고요. 둘째는 크건 작건 간에 무엇인가를 만들고 변화시켜보고 싶다는 욕심이 있습니다. 저는 지금이 그러한 변화를 할 수 있는 적당한 시기라고 생각했고, 대중들도 변화를 기다리고 있다고 믿고 있습니다.

제이슨황: 하하, 욕심이 많으신 것 같네요. 그럼 지금 시작하시는 회사에 대해 말씀해 주시겠습니까?

안상호: 소셜테이블의 아이디어는 식사라는 것이 사람들을 연결시켜주는 훌륭한 매개체라는 것에서 시작했습니다. 다양한 음식과 SNS 기술을 접목하여 사용자들에게 다양한 사람들을 만날 수 있는 플랫폼을 제공하려고 계획하고 있습니다. 우리는 매 주 다양한 시각에 우리가 엄선한 여러 종류의 레스토랑에서 식사를 진행합니다. 사용자들은 사이트에 포스팅 된 음식과 참석자들을 확인하고, 간단히 티켓을 구매하고 즐기시면 되는 겁니다.

제이슨황: 모르는 사람들끼리 만나는 것에 대해 사용자들이 불안해 하지는 않을까요?

안상호: 그러한 분들을 위해서 주제별 모임이라는 것을 준비하고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 각 분야의 전문가들을 초대하여 식사를 진행할 생각입니다. ‘작가와의 식사’, ‘펀드매니저와의 식사’ 등의 테마를 정하고, 향후 그룹을 만들어 교류를 이어갈 수 있게 유도할 생각입니다. 또한 영문 서비스도 같이 진행하기 때문에 한국에서 네트워크 형성에 애를 먹고 있는 외국인들에게 좋은 자리일 것이라고 생각합니다.

제이슨황: 저를 위한 모임도 있을 수 있겠네요?

안상호: 물론입니다. 우리의 기본적인 모토는 지식의 많고, 적음, 성공의 유무를 떠나서 모든 사람들에게 배울 점이 있다는 것이고, 또한 그들의 멘티가 되길 원하는 사람들 역시 많을 것이라고 생각합니다. 취업 준비생들에게는 취업에 성공한 선배들이 훌륭한 멘토가 될 수 있을 것이고, 게임분야에 관심이 많은 사람들은 제임스황님에게 조언을 듣고 싶고, 멘티가 되고 싶어할 것 입니다. 

제이슨황: 오프라인을 온라인으로 연결한다는 아이디어가 재미있네요. 바쁘실 텐데 귀중한 시간 내주셔서 감사합니다. 마지막으로 하실 말씀 있으신가요?

Jason Hwang: Hello. It’s nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself to our KBC members.

Sang-Ho Ahn: Hello. I majored in economics at UC Berkeley and worked as a newspaper reporter in LA before taking a position as a fund manager in a financial company, where I worked until the beginning of this year. I left that job and am now preparing for and providing services through a start-up with some associates of mine.

Jason Hwang: From that, it sounds like you’ve got a varied background. Can you share more details with us about that?

Sang-Ho Ahn: I attended Korea University in Korea but left in the middle to enroll at UC Berkeley.  I had been in engineering in Korea but I wanted to work in the financial industry and so I went to study economics and finance.

Jason Hwang: The US is the leader in the financial industry; why did you come back to Korea?

Sang-Ho Ahn: I graduated right after the Lehman Brothers financial crisis occurred and so, in the US, finance-related positions were being cancelled and employees fired. This meant that getting a job in the field was virtually impossible. That’s why I decided to come back to Korea, which had been relatively unhurt by the situation.

Jason Hwang: How was it working as a fund manager?

Sang-Ho Ahn: I was at the junior level and so I didn’t have authority to make final calls on investment decisions. However, senior managers generally would look at companies that had been filtered through the recommendations of analysts and the company system. So in the consideration of companies, they made their investment decisions based on quantitative factors reached through ordinary evaluations and corporate valuation measurements.

Jason Hwang: How would you go about valuing companies?

Sang-Ho Ahn: There are really many different methods and so it’s hard to give a short explanation. Different valuation tools are used depending on industry, growth prospects and other factors. Of those, we commonly used the DCF tool to calculate present value based on the value of future revenues and expenses.

Jason Hwang: But why did you suddenly quit the company and begin the start-up?

Sang-Ho Ahn: There are various reasons but I had two big main motivations. First, I become somewhat skeptical as a financial person. Having worked as a fund manager, I would meet a lot of businesspeople and office workers and exchange opinions about investing. Companies and investors have fundamentally unmatching perspectives and so this resulted in a lot of differences of opinion, which led to my misgivings about my viewpoint as an investor. I had never actually worked in business and as someone who was just sitting at a desk without having done business, the values of companies which were arrived at through analysis of financial statements and various indices made me wonder if it wasn’t all just a fabrication. I also aspired to go into business and even envied businesspeople. Secondly, I have an ambition to make and change something, whether it be big or small. I think this is the right time for me to make such changes and I believe that the public is also waiting for such changes.

Jason Hwang: Ha, ha… You seem to be quite ambitious! Then can you tell us a bit about the company you’re starting now?

Sang-Ho Ahn: It starts from the idea of a “social table” and that meals are an excellent medium for connecting people. By combining various foods and SNS technologies, we are planning to provide a platform that connects various people to our users. At various times every week, we are offering meals at a variety of restaurants which have been strictly screened. Users can enjoy this experience by checking the food and lists of participants which have been posted online and then purchase their tickets in a convenient way.

Jason Hwang: Don’t users feel somewhat uncomfortable about meeting strangers?

Sang-Ho Ahn: We are preparing thematic get-togethers for those kinds of people. For example, we are thinking to invite experts from various fields to join in the meals. We would have “Dinner with an Artist”, “Dinner with a Fund Manager” or something else as a theme and then attract people by creating groups and encouraging discourse. Also, since we are providing our services in English, I think it could be a good benefit to foreigners who are working hard to build their networks in Korea.

Jason Hwang: Then I guess you’ll also have meetings suitable for me?

Sang-Ho Ahn: Of course. Our basic motto is that regardless of whether or not one has a lot of knowledge, or whether or not one has been successful, we can learn from everyone. Also, I think there will be a lot of people who want to become mentees of others. People who have succeeded at getting a job could be excellent mentors for those preparing to enter the workforce. And those with an interest in the game industry would want advice from you, Jason Hwang, and could become your mentees.

Jason Hwang: That’s an interesting idea to connect the offline with online. You must be busy; thank you for sharing your valuable time with us. Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

Sang-Ho Ahn: First of all, I’d like to thank KBC for the opportunity to do this interview. I think people who wanted to do business in Korea in the past would have had troubles due to language and cultural barriers. From this perspective, the service of KBC provides assistance to many people and is a valuable channel of support. I hope that KBC prospers. Thank you.

Good point! Most of your colleagues do never ever wonder about this side of their job. Its makes that clients are often being neglected by their accountmanager while they are -playing- with their money. The idea of "social table" is a very nice and warm iniative as well. Great interview- I look forward to this starting up! I'm curious to know: what kind of comparable start-ups have you seen along these lines in other markets? It seems very much keeping in line with Keith Ferazzi's "never eat alone" business philosophy, combined with the positive growth of restaurant choices in Seoul. Have you partnered with any local gourmands for restaurant locale insights?

Yes, we have some restaurants being together with us and keep working on more.

I know some similar sites running in State, which they also try to connect people with foods. 

I am not so sure if it is right view, but recently, i see a lot of website service trying to connect people

by using food and restaurant. If you want more information, I will give you more details that i know.

Love entrepreneurship, and this story is one of the reasons why! Nothing beats doing what you enjoy, whether it's working in a company or working on your own, but I admit it's harder to enjoy it when your stability and pay are dependent on other people, other whom you disagree with.
