Anyone is planning a business in Korea?

New year greetings! (it's late). I'm looking for energetic someone who wants to start up businesses with small (or big) size. Whatever. Doing a business is one of my plans, too. But it has not yet decided. Need more on searching, reviewing, and networking for a while.

 

Searching member' IDs here in KBC, I found out most of them have attractive experiences with various national origins and many different careers.

 

So, I'm willing to hear about what you want to do in Korea. And want to give as much helps as I want to get diverse ideas from you. If we could have a common goal, cooperating would be welcome.

 

Possibly you may not have much practical knowledge on what you want. Me neither. Practical experiences may be obtained when we put in action. No matter what career or position you have, your concerns and interests are valuable resources.

I'm currently working on a startup project, although it's just in the planning stages as of right now.

I'm looking for a web developer/programmer who has experience with web based payment systems (not just implementing an already built service like paypal, but also maintaining users credit on the site).

And also, a system where users can send files to each other through the website.

Your website covers in only Korea? In Korea, it would provide several ways to pay out. Like credit card, bank transfer, or cellphone payment. Some internet providers allow users to customize their websites. Probably it may basically implement a payment system like built-in.  But it costs you. It'd be better if you could send me a bit more in detail, in seperate. Maybe I can give you a contact point.

Great! I don't know if the website is a type of commercial. If yes, it's better to contact to a professional supplier, not a freelancer. Think about unexpected down or design to be updated. It's very common issues and burdens causing time and cost.

Hi James! I am new here in KBC and I am glad to come across your note. First I plan to get a job in Korea, yet I don't plan to do that til I'm 65 ^^. I am very much inclined to opening a business, and I am looking at the food, beverage and hospitality  industry as well as shipping, like a lower cost alternative between Korea to the Philippines and the United States (vice versa). I am still in the process of studying the possibilities and mapping out how to and when I will initiate these ventures. For now, I am looking for a possible internship, or even just an exposure in the Logistics / Transportation industry before I move to Korea. It's not easy doing it from the Philippines, which is why I'm very grateful for this web community.

One thing surprising me here is that lots international students search for internship in Korea. Jill, frankly I have very little connections to logistics. But will reply to you when anything good is caught on my eyes. Also you can try to set up the least for your venture at your sides. I don't think it's not quite difficult. And then you can make more feasible plans for the next step. I hope to keep talking about your interests soon or later. Thank you.

Thanks, James. It's really tricky to know where to start and I'm really trying not to get discouraged :) I have been advised to actually start out by teaching English, just to get my feet wet in Korea yet I feel it isn't for me. I applied to a few Universities though, so we'll see what happens.

I agree with James that most probably its a better move to land first in a ´normal´ job before you start your own business unless you have already an entrepreneurs background. Everything what has to do with trade, import/export, logisitics I would recommend first to gain some more insight which you cannot learn from your studybooks. Especially the workfield you point out can be quite tricky in which even more mature companies faces many start-up difficulties.

Yes, I agree as well. You see, I am moving to Korea because I am getting married next year and my fiancee and I had discussed that I will work there. I think the biggest problem is that my Hangeul is pretty terrible (although I can read, write and speak SOME) and the industries I'm looking at don't have a lot of room for people who can't communicate in Hangeul.

I would like to build on my capacity in this industry in Korea and the whole process is very foreign to me. I had almost given up and thought about going back to Washington D.C. instead, then I found KBC and I am here trying to find a feasible starting point with this supportive community.

Thanks a lot for your time and any suggestions, any help will be much appreciated.

Hi James,

there is certainly alot of people 'planning' a business in Korea... 

Like many people here, I plan to set up a business here and will do so probably by the end of the summer. I am also as much interested in what others are doing as you are, but more importantly I am interested in some of the difficulties that people are facing in their endeavours. 

I think that Eun-Shil offers some very sage advice on here... be careful what you think you know, until you try it out on the market of your choosing. As for those looking to enter the F & B market in Seoul / Korea... be very sure you have something unique and distinguishable, as its very cut-throat out there with a slowing economy. (For example for the uninitiated, I counted  at least 17 coffee shops (mostly empty) in one 100 metre stretch near Euljiro 1ga station)
