Great points. I agree. That said, the US roll out of Smashburger is trend setting. Lots of media attention is driving both business and franchisee investment. I'll try and post the Fox Business News interview.

I feel ambience is very cool and will fit well in Korea ( Seoul). I'll post some photos soon.

More to come....
More than just better burgers. Appealing the Korean wellness and well being mindsets, Smashburger's menu has some healthy and tasty options. One can assume a Korean Smashburger menu would have localization, too.

NEW SMASHCHICKEN AND SMASHSALAD MENU ITEMS DEBUT SEPTEMBER 13 Smashburger Expands its Menu to Offer Guests More Sizzling Options

DENVER (09/13/2010)—Smashburger, a nationally acclaimed industry-leading “better burger” restaurant, will launch its expanded chicken and salad menu in all 76 locations on September 13, 2010. Guests will be able to enjoy three additional great tasting Smashchicken sandwich recipes and four new Smashsalad recipes. All Smashchicken sandwiches are available in Smashburger’s traditional smashed and grilled format or in a new “Crispy” offering. Guests can further customize their dining experience with Create Your Own burger or chicken sandwich options and two sizes of Smashsalads.

“The Smashburger concept was born with burgers, chicken and salads. Our customers have told us that they love what we have done with burgers and want to see the same innovation and magic in our chicken and salad menu,” says Smashburger Founder Tom Ryan, ”These expanded offerings will give our customers more reasons to visit Smashburger more often.”

The new array of options on the menu makes Smashburger an everyday destination for its fans and includes:

• BBQ Ranch Smashchicken topped with applewood smoked bacon, haystack onions, lettuce, tomato, BBQ sauce and ranch dressing on an egg bun

• Avocado Club Smashchicken topped with fresh avocado, applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, ranch dressing and mayo on a multi-grained bun

• Buffalo Smashchicken featuring Frank’s® Buffalo Sauce, crumbled blue cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo on an egg bun

• Honey Mustard Chicken Smashsalad a mix of fresh garden greens, topped with strips of crispy or grilled chicken, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes and red onions with creamy honey mustard dressing

• Smashchicken Caesar Smashsalad a mix of fresh garden greens topped with strips of crispy or grilled chicken, parmesan cheese, diced tomatoes and croutons with parmesan Caesar dressing

• Harvest Chicken Smashsalad a mix of fresh garden greens topped with strips of crispy or grilled chicken, marinated balsamic tomatoes, raisins, cranberries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, blue cheese, with balsamic vinaigrette dressing

• BBQ Chicken Ranch Smashsalad a mix of fresh garden greens topped with strips of crispy or grilled chicken, applewood smoked bacon, diced tomatoes, haystack onions, cheddar cheese, with buttermilk ranch dressing and bbq sauce.

In addition to the new chicken and salad menu items, Smashburger is known for its Certified Angus Beef Smashburgers and signature smashsides–such as rosemary and garlic-seasoned Smashfries and veggie frites. Smashburger also offers Smashdogs, Häagen-Dazs shakes and floats, beer and wine.

Me, too, 7:20 am Sunday here and I'm craving a mushroom swiss Smashburger.
It's really good that Smashburger is diversifying its menu because I always get the impression that Koreans in general think hamburgers are greasy and unhealthy. Without localizing its menu, Smashburger might have a hard time getting more than one or two stores in Seoul to serve mainly Ex-pat customers.
Right, regarding greasy and unappealing burgers would be hard to sell. And, although expats' craving for a great burger is a factor, Smashburger Korea will have a much broader appeal. The niche Better Burger market appeals to many in the US, too. It's trendy, up market, high quality, service-driven, and a will be a cool destination.
Great question. I'm not sure regarding the fries. Smashburger fries (Smash Fries) are very unique and a big part of the experience. Frankly, lots of women love the fries and rave above them. The fries are very gourmet. I've been in discussions on the Beef issue, etc.

Quick question.
For Koreans and expats in Seoul... what's your favorite place for a great burger?
Thanks for sharing.
I've been eating burgers in Korea since late 1980 when there were still Wendy's in Seoul. Been watching burgers in Korea since 1986 when McD's opened. BTW that prompted a minjok Rice vs Beef Korea vs. the West controversy.
The local franchisee and Wendy's parted after the IMF. :)
I happen to think Lotteria does a good burger... I love the creativity they put into their menu.. We've got a McDs and Lotteria right near by office but I always go to the Lotteria.
While not in Seoul, the best burger I've had is from Gorilla Burger in Daegu. I'd even go as far as saying that it's the best burger place that I've been to in Korea.
