Chairman Lee of the Korea FTA Industry Association has been sharing with us the big picture of the effects that Korea's free trade agreements with the rest of the world are bringing about and each podcast is looking at these trends from a different perspective. But one underlying theme is that these FTAs mean a lot more than just a plain reduction in tariffs; they are leading to many other effects in the economy, and even society at large.

 

In the last podcast, Chairman Lee discussed the effects of the FTAs throughout the value-chain. In this podcast, he emphasizes the far-reaching changes brought about in the overall "ecosystem" that go beyond the simple and initial efforts of nations to focus on comparative advantage. 

 

As mentioned before, management support services, such as legal, financial and accounting fields, are evolving to adapt. This in turn is leading to increased business transparency and competition in the social realm. From there, even the cultural field is evolving as trade barriers to movies, travel and other entertainment services are falling.

 

And now we see that various new trends in terms of corporate social responsibility (CSR), certification standardization, fair trade trends, regulations for protection of the natural environment, safety and security rules, labor standards and pressure for animal protection, are actually adding to the complexity of the trading environment. Some of these new "barriers to trade" are already being dealt with in the free trade agreements, and we can expect that the rest will too with time, helping to alleviate the added burden.As they do, we can expect the entire "ecosystem" to evolve, adjusting continuously to the changes.

 

Chairman Lee points out that whether one supports or opposes the FTA trend is now a moot point. With 60-70% of global trade now moving under free trade agreements, it is now necessary for people to participate, learn and adapt in order to make the best of the global trade landscape.

이창우 회장님 FTA 생태계에 대한 설명 감사합니다.

다시 한번 느끼지만 무역은 무역의 영역을 이미 넘어 경영, 법률, 금융, 특허, 나아가 사회시스템까지 포함되고 있네요.

이창우 회장님께서 설명하시는 내용과 사용하시는 단어들은 현재 이슈가 되는 것들이 많네요. 기업의 사회책임, 공정무역등...  FTA팟캐스트를 보면 현재 글로벌 비즈니스의 방향을 짐작할 수 있는것 같습니다.
