Hello,

I may be reaching or maybe posting in the wrong spot here, but I have a couple immigration questions that I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on. First, I'm wondering if anyone here has had experience in hiring a foreign chef. From what I've gathered so far, this is a very grey area and approval or denial of the working visa rest largely on the mood of (or your relationship with) the official that happens to process the paperwork. I'm hoping someone out there can share some concrete experiences with me. Secondly, to obtain a C2 (short-term business) visa, a letter from your company attesting to the purpose of your visit and guaranteeing financial support is required. In the case of sole proprietorship, is this requirement omitted or is a letter from myself actually required/accepted? Lastly, as I will also be processing a D8 visa for myself very soon, if anyone has a contact (or is an employee themself) at any of the Korean Immigration offices, I'd greatly appreciate being put in contact to discuss these issues directly. Thank you all and I hope any information posted here will be of use to others as well.

Joe - That's a tough question. I could be wrong, but I bet you'll not have much luck sponsoring a visa for another foreigner unless you're backed up by a solid visa yourself AND funding. I keep wishing we had a member on KBC who works in the visa field, but so far I haven't seen anyone. But as for a contact at a Korean Immigration Office, I don't think you can pick your official; it depends on where you live and the available window when your number comes up in the waiting list.

I know I'm not being very helpful here; I just don't know. Do others have some better insights?

THanks for your reply Steven. I would definitely have my visa squared away and business registered, ect before attempting to sponsor someone else. For planning purposes, I'm wondering how long I should expect to wait from the time the business is established to the time I have permission to employ a foreign chef, or even what the chances are that I (he/she) would be flat out denied. Having an apt chef is of course essential to a restaurant and I wouldn't want to open with a subpar product. Thanks again for taking the time to respond Steven.
Have you checked with Simon Hong of the Seoul Global Business Support Center? He's a member on KBC and his center supports foreigners setting up new businesses in Seoul. I don't know if he's got specific knowledge of visa issues, but I know he's working on a booklet about opening a restaurant in Korea.
I've not yet contacted him, but I surly will. I'm sure he or his office have some direct experience in helping others. Thanks again!
