An Evening of New Traditions
By Dann Gaymer
On October 15 great minds and talents came together to meet, greet and share their
perspectives at the 2010 Global Business Networking Event ‘An Evening of New
Traditions’. Held in the unique venue of Min’s Club in Insadong, Seoul, the
event kicked off at 6pm and concluding at 10pm, leaving no doubt in anyone’s
mind that this was strictly a function for the grownups; an after office get
together, where the minds were still switched on and hungry for ideas and
stimulus. While this was the first time the event had been held it was no
mystery to the movers and shakers of the Korean business world thanks to its co
hosting by Seoul Global Business Support Center and Korea Business Central, in
addition to Samsung and Jaguar amongst others. What unfolded was a premium
networking events, with the obligatory trading of business cards and chit chat
against a symphony of wine glass rims touching against one another.
Over 200 guests turned out, first enjoying a Pansori performance (Korean folk singing)
and a Gayageum recital, before delving into the international buffet. Naturally
after dinner it was time for the mingling and networking to commence. One of
the key names behind the event was Steven Bammel. Bammel feels business
networking events such as this are important in the community, stating, “Events
like this provide a business networking opportunity with a great cross-section
of the Korean and international communities and what’s more in a venue that’s
not just another 5-star hotel.” Bammel also stated that crucial focus of the
event was on cross cultural business networking, not simply confined to Korean or
expat circles—something indispensable in terms of facilitating international
business.
However Bammel admits that the event still has some way to go in order to be as high
profile as it could be; “We didn’t get any eye-popping names, partly because of
the G-20 coming up and also, as it was our first event, we haven’t built
credibility yet.” Yet he added, “Hopefully the next one will have VIPs to boast
of. The highest ranking person this time was probably Peter Son, Director
General of the Marketing Division at Seoul Business Agency.” For the future the
Bammel revealed intentions is to hold similar business networking events,
hopefully on a bi-annual basis.
