Information on the SGBSC-KBC Co-Hosted Event - Global Business Networking: "An Evening of New Traditions"

Preparations on the upcoming offline event are in full swing (with a slight pause for Chuseok) and I've set up this discussion to keep the membership informed about progress and to answer questions.

The main organizers are KBC Event Organizer William Sisson and SGBC Senior Consultant Youngmi Cho. They are being supported by KBC PR Administrator Pilar Perez and business coach Sharon Noh. My extra special thanks to the team for their excellent job!

The event is scheduled for October 15, 6-10pm at Mins Club in Insadong. It's a fantastic venue. See the photos here or visit the website to see for yourself: http://www.minsclub.co.kr/bemarket/shop/index.php. I'm not sure the full menu yet, but it's going to be exceptional, also with beer and makgeolli.

Our goal for the event is to create a relaxed and social atmosphere where people can meet and greet each other without the pressures of a strict agenda. However, we will recognize our sponsors and give dignitaries the opportunity to greet the attendees with some short remarks. Other important announcements might also be included.

In order to achieve our goal of a true international event, invitations have been extended to representatives from chambers of commerce, embassies and executive level business leaders in Korea. We are also open to any person, Korean or foreigner that shows an interest in attending the event.

So far, we're about half-way to our sponsorship goal, which will help us keep the event costs low at what will be quite an exclusive location with great food and Korean traditional music.

We are still looking for 3-4 more corporate or organizational sponsors to donate to the event and get their names out in front of the international business community in Korea. If your organization would be interested in this opportunity, please contact the event organizers. More information is included in the sponsorship marketing flyers which can be downloaded at the following links: English version, Korean version.

An Evening of New Traditions

By Dann Gaymer

On October 15 great minds and talents came together to meet, greet and share their perspectives at the 2010 Global Business Networking Event ‘An Evening of New
Traditions’. Held in the unique venue of Min’s Club in Insadong, Seoul, the
event kicked off at 6pm and concluding at 10pm, leaving no doubt in anyone’s
mind that this was strictly a function for the grownups; an after office get
together, where the minds were still switched on and hungry for ideas and
stimulus. While this was the first time the event had been held it was no
mystery to the movers and shakers of the Korean business world thanks to its co
hosting by Seoul Global Business Support Center and Korea Business Central, in
addition to Samsung and Jaguar amongst others. What unfolded was a premium
networking events, with the obligatory trading of business cards and chit chat
against a symphony of wine glass rims touching against one another.

Over 200 guests turned out, first enjoying a Pansori performance (Korean folk singing) and a Gayageum recital, before delving into the international buffet. Naturally
after dinner it was time for the mingling and networking to commence. One of
the key names behind the event was Steven Bammel. Bammel feels business
networking events such as this are important in the community, stating, “Events
like this provide a business networking opportunity with a great cross-section
of the Korean and international communities and what’s more in a venue that’s
not just another 5-star hotel.” Bammel also stated that crucial focus of the
event was on cross cultural business networking, not simply confined to Korean or
expat circles—something indispensable in terms of facilitating international
business.

However Bammel admits that the event still has some way to go in order to be as high profile as it could be; “We didn’t get any eye-popping names, partly because of
the G-20 coming up and also, as it was our first event, we haven’t built
credibility yet.” Yet he added, “Hopefully the next one will have VIPs to boast
of. The highest ranking person this time was probably Peter Son, Director
General of the Marketing Division at Seoul Business Agency.” For the future the
Bammel revealed intentions is to hold similar business networking events,
hopefully on a bi-annual basis.

Oh! Thanks, Pilar. :-)
Wow, it looks amazing so far! Sadly I won't be able to attend since I'm living a long way from there (almost at the other side of the planet in fact).

Best luck for the event, I'm sure it will be a huge success.
Should be attending, and hopefully a couple of my co-workers will join me as well.
So cool it's at the Mingadaheon.
I've been researching the Min family and a descendant who emigrated to the US in the 1920s, lived in Golden Colorado, then attended UC Berkeley.

For those with an interest in Min history...

During the late 19th and early 20th century, few Korean families (clans) had a profound impact on country as the Mins. The Yeoheung Min were a noble family with an illustrious past. Nevertheless, their influence and prosperity had waned by the mid 1800s.

However, with marriage of the future and ill-fated Queen Min ( Empress Myeongseong) to the boy king Kojong, the family rose to dominate the court at a time of great change—Korea the chessboard of rival imperial powers and concession seekers. Until the Japanese colonial takeover, the Min family would play a crucial role in Korean modernization, and diplomacy.

The venue for the KBC event was once owned by Min Ik-du.
Fascinating stuff! Thanks for sharing... I should point out that it's not just a KBC event. We're honored that the Seoul Global Business Support Center is co-hosting with us.
Wow, thank you so much, Don, for this information. FYI, Mingadaheon (Min's Club) is Min family's legacy and it was built in the early 1900s. The house was designated as one of the Cultural Assets selected by Seoul City Government. Pansori and Gayageum performance at the garden of Mingadaheon will become an unforgettable experience of Korean traditional culture!

The face on that graphic reminds me of an article I read recently. Didn't Min Yong-Hwan commit suicide shortly after the treaty that turned Korea into a Japanese colony? Or am I getting him confused with someone else?
