currently manages Pica publishing as a co-president.

뉴욕의 유명 비즈니스 컨설팅회사에 근무하였고, 현재 도서출판 파이카를

Dennis Oh says: 안녕하세요. 이규빈 대표님, 저는 이번 릴레이 인터뷰를 진행하게 된 Korea
Business Central 운영자 Dennis Oh입니다.  만나서
반갑습니다. 이규빈 대표님 소개 부탁합니다.

Kyubin Lee says: 안녕하세요, 저는 도서출판 파이카 공동대표 이규빈이라고 합니다. 이렇게 KBC 회원님들 만나뵙게 되어 반갑습니다. 첫 릴레이 인터뷰라고 하니 많이 떨립니다.

Dennis Oh says:  이규빈 대표님의 프로필을 간략하게 소개 부탁합니다.

Kyubin Lee says:  네, 저는 한국에서 태어나서 초등학교 3학년 때까지 서울에 살았고, 초등학교 4학년 때부터  고2까지는 아프리카 수단에
살았습니다. 고2 때 미국으로 가, 펜실베이니아 대학교에서 경영학과 국제학 전공하고,  뉴욕에서 일하다가 1년
전 한국으로 돌아와 출판사를하고 있습니다.

최근엔 <세계가 사랑한 한국>이라는 도서가 나와서 홍보활동으로 바쁘고, 영문판도 출간 진행 중입니다. 그 외에는 3권 정도의 도서를 기획하고 있습니다.

Dennis Oh says:  네. 다양한 곳에서 외국생활을 경험하셨네요. 어린 시절 아프리카에서 생활하던 이야기를 들려주실 수 있나요? 예를 들어 어떤 계기로 수단에 가시게
되었는지....

Kyubin Lee says:  아버지께서 건설업에 계셔서 발령이 나서 따라가게 되었습니다. 지금도 부모님은 수단에 살고 계시고요.

Dennis Oh says:  네 그곳에서 힘들었던 점은 없었나요? 예를 들면, 문화의 차이....

Kyubin Lee says:  수단은 이집트 바로 아래 자리 잡고 있고, 1년 내내 덥고 건조한 나라입니다. 제가 살던 수도는 이슬람권이었고, 남쪽엔 크리스천이어서 내전 중이었죠.

Kyubin Lee says: 처음 외국에 나가보는 것이라 많은 문화 차이가 있었는데요, 저는 워낙 새로운 것을 접하는 것을 좋아해서 즐거운 시간이었습니다. 미국학교에 다니면서 여러 문화권 친구들도
사귀고.... 다양한 경험을 하게 해 주었습니다.

Dennis Oh says: 그럼 외국 문화에서 오는 차이들은 순조롭게 극복하셨겠네요.

Kyubin Lee says:  네, 이슬람권에 대해 많은 편견이 있지만, 그걸 뛰어넘어 매우 좋은 사람들을 많이 만났기 때문에 그곳에서 생활한 것이 넓은 시야를 준 것 같습니다.

Kyubin Lee says:  아주 행운이라고 생각해요. ㅎㅎ

Dennis Oh says:  그럼 미국으로 건너가시게 된 계기는 대학교 입학을 위한 건가요?

Kyubin Lee says:  네, 수단에서 쭉 미국학교에 다녔기 때문에 대학진학을 위해 고2 때 미국으로 가서 기숙사 학교에 다녔습니다. 수단에서 겪었던 경험들이나 목격한 장면들이 제 가치관에
많은 영향을 미쳤던 것 같습니다. 고등학생 때는 계속 의대나 생물학과를 생각했었습니다.

국제적인 문제를 해결하는데 이바지할 수 있겠다 싶었죠....

마지막에 와튼으로 지원을 결정한 것은 국제기구에서 의료행정 일을 하는데 경영학적 마인드나 국제학 공부가 도움될 것이라고 봤기 때문입니다.

Kyubin Lee says:  결과적으로는, 의료행정이 아닌 재무학을 공부했고 출판사를 하고 있으니, 진로가 많이 바뀌었지만.. 아직 국제개발협력 쪽에는 많은 관심을 가지고 있는 만큼
언젠가는 접점을 찾을 수 있다고 기대합니다.

Dennis Oh says:  그럼 미국대학 생활에서 유학생신분으로  경험했던 기억에 남는일은 무엇이 있나요?

Kyubin Lee says:  한국이나 수단 생활은 페이스가 비교적 느렸던 반면 미국은 개인주의와 성과주의가 강해 학교 내에서도 학생들끼리의 경쟁이 치열했던 것 같습니다.

숙제를 할 때도 팀워크와 분업이 철저하기 때문에, 구성원으로서 자신의 몫을 해내야 한다는 생각이 들었습니다. 학생임에도 꽤 무거운 책임감을 느껴 가끔은 학교가 아니라 회사에 다니는 듯한 느낌도 들었고요.

Kyubin Lee says:  철저히 수업준비를 하지 않으면 학우들 앞에서 교수님께 질문공세를 받으며 곤혹스러울 때도 잦았죠. 그렇지만, 자꾸 질문을 받고 궁지에 몰리며 생각하고 문제를 해결하는
능력은 많이 좋아진 것 같습니다. 

Dennis Oh says:  그렇군요. 그럼.... 경영이나 국제학 분야의 공부를 하셨는데 파이카를 설립하게 된 계기가 있나요? 아니면 파이카 설립이 이규빈 대표님의 꿈을 이루는 과정
중에 하나인가요?

Kyubin Lee says:  이건 과정을 설명해 드려야 할 것 같습니다. 제가 파이카의 설립자는 아니고, 김혜원 공동대표가 시작했습니다. 김 대표는 펜실베이니아 대학교에서 저와 같은
헌츠맨 프로그램에서 경영학과 국제학을 공부했습니다. 

같은 과이지만, 4학년 때 우연히 룸메이트를 하게 되면서야 급격하게 친해졌습니다. 김 대표는 4학년 때 이미 사업 구상을 하고 있었고, 저도 간간이 함께 아이디어 구상을 했습니다.

Dennis Oh says:  친구이자 공동사업자가 되었군요.

Kyubin Lee says:  졸업 후, 김 대표는 한국으로 돌아가서 파이카를 시작했고 저는 뉴욕의 금융컨설팅 업체에 취직했습니다. JP Morgan Chase, HSBC,
Citibank 같은 곳을 컨설팅해주는 회사였습니다.

다만, 뉴욕에서 일을 하면서도 퇴근 후에 온라인에서 김 대표와 자주 이야기를 나누었고....

날이 갈수록 제 회사 일보다 파이카 일이 재미있어져서 사표를 내기로 했습니다.

Dennis Oh says:  큰 결정을 하셨네요.

Kyubin Lee says:  그 당시는 걱정이 많았습니다. 지금까지 쌓아놓은 것을 무너뜨려 버리는 것도 같고, 부모님께도 죄송한 마음이 있었죠.

Kyubin Lee says:  그렇지만, 자꾸 생각을 해봐도 역시 해 봐야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 용기를 냈고, 1년 정도 지났는데.... 아직 판단하기는 이르지만, 그 선택을
믿고, 아직 후회될 때는 그리 많지 않은 것 같습니다....

Dennis Oh says:  그럼 지금 파이카에서 일하신지는 약 1년이 되었는데, 그동안 어떠한 일이 있었는지 말씀해 주세요.

Kyubin Lee says:  파이카는 현재 경제/경영/인문/사회 쪽 비소설 도서를 출간하고 있습니다. 지금까지 5권의 책이 나왔고요. 출판사로써는 책이 많이 없는 상태에서 저자를 섭외하는
과정이 가장 힘들었던 것 같습니다. 

Kyubin Lee says:  제가 중요하다고 생각되는 이슈와 대중적으로 판매가 잘 되는 이슈가 항상 일치하지 않기 때문에 판매를 놓치지 않으면서도 좋은 메시지를 던질 수 있는 소재를 찾는것을
중요하게 생각했습니다.

제가 외국생활을 오래 하다 와서 한국 독자의 성향과 다른 점도 있었고요.

<평범한 스미스 씨의 인생역전>의 경우 '자신의 적성에 잘 맞는 일을 찾아 성공하라.'라는 다양성을 추구하는 메시지였고, <스타트업 바이블>은 '취업에만 목매달지 말고 너만의 아이디어를 찾아 창업해라.'라는
메시지였습니다. 그리고 최근에 나온 책이 <세계가 사랑한 한국>입니다.

고생도 많이 하고 공을 들인 도서입니다. 

Dennis Oh says:  "세계가 사랑한 한국" 도서를 진행하면서 외국인 저자 섭외는 어렵지 않았나요?

Kyubin Lee says:  많이 어려웠죠. 그때는 저희가 나온 책도 없었고 진행하면서 느꼈지만, 정말 한국에 대한 전문성을 갖추신 외국인분들이 부족하다는 것을 많이
느꼈습니다.

Kyubin Lee says:  최종결과물이 나왔을 때 아쉬운 점도 없지 않았지만, 한국의 브랜드를 만드는 내용에 많은 관심을 두게 됐고, 특히 '한국이 세계의 사랑을 받기 전에 세계를 사랑해야
한다.', '한국이라는 브랜드는 만들어서 광고하는 것이 아니라 사람들이 직접 찾고, 그 브랜드를 믿어야만 전파될 수
있다.'라는 메시지에 많은 공감했습니다.

Kyubin Lee says:  그리고 저자님들이 한국에 느낀 애정과 열정도 굉장히 감동적이엇죠.

Dennis Oh says:  네 저 또한 다양한 국적의 저자가 참여하여 한국에 대한 내용을 다루었다는 게 저에게 큰 의미로 다가왔습니다.

Kyubin Lee says:  제가 영어와 중국어를 하고, 김 대표가 일본어를 해서 언어적으로나 문화적으로 많은 어려움이 있진 않았습니다.

Kyubin Lee says:  다만, 좀 더 깊은 이야기를 끌어내고자 저자들을 압박해야 하는 상황은 많이 있었죠.

해외에 있는 저자분들도 꽤 계셔서 그런 분들은 조금 어려웠던 것 같습니다.

Dennis Oh says:  그럼 앞으로는 파이카 대표로서, 국제, 경영에 관심이 있는 한국인으로서 앞으로 어떠한 계획을 하고 있는지 말씀해 주세요. 

Kyubin Lee says:  당분간은 파이카와 비소설 출판에 집중할 계획입니다. 내년엔 여성/실용 쪽으로 분야를 넓혀갈 예정이고, 기회가 된다면 출판 외에 교육이나 문화, 미디어 쪽으로도
컨텐츠를 넓혀 나가고 싶은 욕심이 있습니다. 그리고 좋은 콘텐츠를 많이 개발해서 해외사업도 꾸준히 확장해 나가고
싶습니다.

Dennis Oh says:  네 앞으로 이규빈 대표님의 활약 기대합니다.

Kyubin Lee says:  12년 남짓 외국에서 생활하다 돌아오니 한국 생활이 많이 어색합니다. 학창시절을 외국에서 보냈으니, 한국에 친구들이 많이 없어서 미국생활이 그립기도 한 것 같습니다.
KBC를 통해 비즈니스에도 많은 도움을 받으면 좋겠지만, 일을 떠나 여러 분야에서 활동하고 계시는 분들을 많이 만났으면
좋겠습니다.

Kyubin Lee Lee says: 많이 많이 연락 주세요! 

Dennis Oh says:  네 이규빈 대표님! KBC 첫번째 릴레이 인터뷰에 참가해 주셔서 대단히 감사합니다.

Dennis Oh says: Hello Ms Kyubin Lee. I’m Dennis Oh, administer of the Relay Interviews here at Korea Business Central. It’s nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself.

Kyubin Lee says: Hello, I’m Kyubin Lee, founder of Pica Publishing. It’s great to meet the members of KBC like this. I’m really nervous as this is the first Relay Interview.

Dennis Oh says: Could you briefly introduce your profile to us please.

Kyubin Lee says: Yes. I was born in Korea and lived in Seoul until the 3rd grade of elementary school, then from the 4th grade until the 2nd grade of high school I lived in Sudan in Africa. After that I majored in Business and International Studies at the University of Pennsylvania in America. Last year after working in New York I returned to Korea as a publisher. These days I’m busy with promotion activities for a book titled: <The World Loves Korea > (세계가 사랑한 한국), and we’re also in the
middle of developing an English edition. Aside from this there’s also a plan for 3 more books.

Dennis Oh says: You’ve had experience in some diverse places abroad. Can you share with us about life in Africa when you were young? For example how you ended up going there…

Kyubin Lee says: I ended up going with my father after he was appointed there in his construction company. My parents still live in Sudan today.

Dennis Oh says: Weren’t there any difficult points about living there? For example cultural difference…

Kyubin Lee says: Sudan is situated right above Egypt; it’s a hot and dry country all year round. The capital city where I was living was Muslim, and at that time was in the middle of a civil war with the Christian south of the country.

Kyubin Lee says: It was the first time I’d been abroad so it was very different culturally. I’m naturally fond of coming into contact with new things so it was an enjoyable time. And while I was attending school in America I made many friends there… which provided me with a variety of experiences.

Dennis Oh says: So you must have overcome the cultural differences without too much difficulty.

Kyubin Lee says: Yes. There’s lots of prejudice concerning Islamic culture, but once you overcome that I guess your viewpoint becomes broadened owing to meeting so many really great people.

Kyubin Lee says: I think I had some good fortune there. Haha.

Dennis Oh says: So when you crossed over to America it was so you could enter university there?

Kyubin Lee: Yes, I went to the campus for university entrance when I went to America when I was in the 2nd grade of high school because I’d attended an American school in Sudan. I guess my experiences in Sudan and outlook on the future there affected my values greatly. When I was in high school I continuously thought about biology and medical school. I wanted to have been able to contribute to the solving of international problems. Finally I think it was because the decision to apply to Wharton was
a decision to work in medical administration at an international organisation, and because I thought it would be helpful for my business-sense and international studies.

Kyubin Lee says: The result of which was the road that I had been travelling down changed when I studied finance rather than medical administration, and eventually became a publisher… but I still retain a lot of interest in the area of international co-operation and development, and expect that I could
come into contact with that area again sometime.

Dennis Oh says: Did you have any memorable experiences as an international student in an American university?

Kyubin Lee says: Life in Korea and Sudan took place at a similar pace. In America, on the other hand, individuality and productivity are emphasized, as is fierce competition between groups of students within the schools. When you do homework, the allocation of teamwork is emphasized: so as a member of a team it feels like there is a duty to accomplish one’s quota. Even as a student you seem to take on a heavy responsibility, and sometimes it feels like you are working in an office rather than being at school.

Kyubin Lee says: If you don’t thoroughly prepare for class then it’s not uncommon to be embarrassed in front of fellow students when you are grilled by the professor.

Dennis Oh says: I see. So… When you were in the fields of business or international studies, were you presented with the opportunity to establish the Pica group? If not this then was it the realization of a more internal process in one of your personal ambitions?

Kyubin Lee says: I guess I should start by describing the process. I’m not Pica’s founder: my co-founder Kim Hyewon(김혜원) actually started it. She studied business with me on the Huntsman programme at Pennsylvania University. Although we were members of the same department, we didn’t meet until the 4th year, when we quickly grew close after becoming roommates by chance. In the fourth year she already had business plans and we would occasionally come up with ideas together.

Dennis Oh says: So your friend became your business partner.

Kyubin Lee says: After graduation, Kim returned to Korea to start Pica, and I started work at a financial
consulting firm in New York. It offered consultancy to places like JP Morgan Chase, HSBC, and Citibank.
I would often chat online with Kim while working or after coming home from the office… As I got older, work at Pica became more interesting than my office, resulting in me eventually handing in my letter of resignation.

Dennis Oh says: It sounds like it was a long process.

Kyubin Lee says: I was really worried at that time. I guess I felt sorry for my parents for making them worry that everything I’d accomplished would crumble and have all been for nothing.

Kyubin Lee says: But even though these thoughts often passed through my head, I knew I was going to give it a try. So I plucked up the courage, and 1 year passed… Even though my decision hadn’t been proved to be correct yet, I believed it was the right one, and I guess there weren’t too many times when I
regretted it…

Dennis Oh says: So you’ve been working at Pica for about 1 year, could you talk about some things that happened in that time.

Kyubin Lee says: At the moment Pica is publishing books in the areas of Economy, Business, Humanities, and Sociology. And currently 5 books have come out. As a publisher in a situation without too many books, I guess I would say the process
of liaising with writers was the most difficult.

Kyubin Lee says: The issue that I think most important and also the issue connected with selling to the general public, is that introducing a good message and not losing sales are things which don’t  always fall in line with one another. And I lived abroad for a long time so my reading habits are different from that of a normal Korean reader. In the case of <Ordinary Mr Smith turns his life around> (평범한
스미스 씨의 인생역전), there were s variety of messages like “Find and succeed in work that suits you”, and in <Start-up Bible> (스타트업 바이블): “Don’t be tied down by seeking employment, find your
own idea and start a business”. The book which came out recently is <The World Loves Korea> (세계가 사랑한 한국). It’s a book which was laboured over in a big way.

Dennis Oh says: Wasn’t it hard to select a foreign author whilst promoting <The World Loves Korea> (세계가 사랑한 한국)?

Kyubin Lee says: It was very difficult: the book hadn’t yet come out at the time we were promoting it. But the feeling was that it was wasteful to keep foreigners with expertise about Korea in the shadows.

Kyubin Lee says: When the final result came out there were no regrets, but a lot of interest in the sections on ‘Korea’s brand’, especially in the messages: “Before Korean receives the world’s love it has to first love the world.”And, “Korea is not a brand to be advertised: people must find it themselves and believe in it for it to spread.”

Kyubin Lee says: And the author’s affection and passion for Korea was very touching.

Dennis Oh says: Yes, authors of various other countries participating and handling Korea as a subject held great meaning for me as well.

Kyubin Lee says: With my English and Chinese, and Kim speaking Japanese, there wasn’t a great deal of difficulty with language.

Kyubin Lee says: There were many situations where the authors were put under pressure to produce deeper narrative in their work. I guess it must have been a little difficult even for the authors staying abroad.

Dennis Oh says: As a representative of Pica, could you tell us about any future plans you have to accommodate Koreans interested in international and business topics.

Kyubin Lee says: I’m planning to concentrate on Pica and on publishing non-fiction for the time being. In the next year I’ve got plans to expand in the area of
femininity/practicality, and if that is able to come to fruition, then besides publishing I have a hunger to go in the direction of widening available content about education, culture, and the media.

Dennis Oh says: Yes I look forward to your activities in the future.

Kyubin Lee says: Korean life was very awkward for me after living abroad for over 12 years. I spent my school days abroad so I didn’t have many Korean friends and I guess missed the American life. It would be great if I could get help for my business through KBC, and meet people active in areas other than my
particular field of work. Also I have a desire to find and develop useful content here in order to steadily expand my business abroad.

Kyubin Lee says: Be sure to stay in contact!
