North Korea's self-developed software operating system "Red Star" was brought to light for the first time by a Russian satellite broadcaster yesterday.

North Korea's top IT experts began developing the Red Star in 2006, but its composition and operation mechanisms were unknown until the internet version of the Russia Today-TV featured the system, citing the blog of a Russian student who goes to the Kim Il-sung University in Pyongyang.

The Red Star is based on Linux, a free and open software operating system, but looks a lot like the Microsoft Windows on display. It also has a similar user interface.

That's just great, "Red Star" :) It's going to be popular among indie developers.

Its web browser is named “My Country” :)

I read that it is available for $5 and comes in the Server and the Desktop edition. The apps are selling at twice the price and need to be bought separately.

The minimum system requirement is 256 MB of RAM and a Pentium III processor coupled with a 3 GB hard-disk space.
I would love to see this software and the user interface in action. Maybe someone will create a Red Star screensaver or motif for MS Word on the Mac.

Hopefully it does not have hidden software that can turn your computer into a zombie bot net!
That is indeed interesting. I would love to fiddle with an OS like that, but I can't imagine it's all that great. Why would they need to go beyond just a normal Linux OS though? Seems unnecessary to me.
IT expertises in North Korea is one of top classes in the world. If they are working on very positive way, they could contribute world peace. As a Korean, I hope to see that happen in near future.
