Hi members,

I joined KBC about 9 months ago and would be happy to share my experiences thus far.

When I joined KBC I was in the process of finishing my undergraduate studies and seeking opportunities that would enable me to come to Korea after graduating. I started by creating my linkedin profile and by chance came upon KBC. Unlike linkedin, I have found the KBC site to be much more 'personalised' and I have been able to meet so many new friends and expand my network along the way!

Specifically, my primary objective at the start of the year was to secure an internship position and I believe KBC played a big part in acheiving this goal. Some of you may recall that I posted a discussion requesting advice and the response I received was very encouraging. I have found KBC members to be very helpful which was a welcome surprise! To be honest, I was under the impression that business folks would be too busy or unwilling to assist 'newbies' like me, but the KBC members I have met have gone out of their way to help me and for that I am very thankful. Alot of doors were opened because of KBC and lead to a few opportunities relevant to my career path. I was able to build on my knowledge of the Korean legal industry and job market and strategies in general.

I am now happy to report that I am now in Korea, 3 weeks into my new intern position. With the help of a scholarship from the Australia-Korea Foundation I was able to fund my relocation and I am working for a public interest legal group. I am so excited about this new chapter of my life, which I am sure would not have been possible without the help of KBC. To all those people who are in a similar situation I was a couple of months ago, my advice would be: don't give up! Cliche, I know, but there will be inevitable rejections along the way. Instead of discouraging you, let this be a motivator and see it as a chance to learn and hone your skills. Ask for feedback and make connections, you never know when that connection you make will lead to a great opportunity.

Well that's it from me for now. I look forward to hearing all your personal success stories!

Marissa

I don't know if this is still valid, but my tip would be as heard from others:

Why not move to Seoul / Korea and start searching for an internship 24/7 ?!

You know, I would LOVE to do that (and it's not the money for the flight that is lacking ;)), but I just don't have the time, as I have to push through my massive workload, while at the same time trying to catapult ;) myself into a business opportunity in Korea from afar!

For your question, as far as I understood, Mrs. Bonnici acquired "only" one internship in Korea - or are you asking for our intern/business experience in general?

Hi Sung,

Sorry for the late reply! Somehow I did not come across your post until now.

Well I guess there is no one magic formula (unfortunately). All I can say is be persistent and creative. Network through events and by getting in touch with people in your industry. Educate yourself, about what is going on in the industry too.

My internship was in the legal field.

Again, sorry for the late reply. Have you had any luck yet?

Marissa

Am sensing that this won't be my only post in this section ^.^ KBC is definitely an empowering, diverse community of professionals.

I stumbled across KBC while on facebook as I was entering the last few months of a contract in an old-school Korean company. It turned out to be the breath off fresh air & the source of the collegial support system that I was needing.

Within my first month of joining, I was asked to participate in a KBC 9.9 discussion -and received nothing but encouragement & positive reinforcement for simply being "me" -perhaps for the first time ever in my adult life ^.~

It was that experience -plus the on-line interactions which I've been thoroughly enjoying with many insightful people here, which have helped me make several professionally empowering choices in the time that has elapsed since ...and I'm feeling increasingly "at home" here ^.^

I hope more people will post their "warm fuzzies" as well ...regardless of how big or small they might seem.
We've enjoyed the podcasts, too. The format fits well with people's business schedule.
Great going Daniel!!!
Good stuff!

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemans,

Finally, my dream will come true, i will come to Seoul in January 2011, as an intern in a random Company which i dont know yet, i became a member of AIESEC, the group of exchange in 107 countries, so because it's a Dream for me and i have a Master Degree, i am the priority they said, everybody here helps me, thank you for everything you did for me, but what do you think will be my next step, can we meet, if you dont mind, so you can tell me how i can get a job after my internship.

Best Regards,

Adhoum Mehdi

Wow, no kidding! That was easy.... Congratulations!

Dead Adhoum,

wow, congrats! This sounds very promising to me, as I also got in touch with my local AIESEC group for the same reason. They have a network, which will in the end maybe will my saviour. ;) Concerning the "random company", by accident I found on the website of DHL (they are in Seoul + Incheon) that they have an agreement with AIESEC!

The funny thing is, DHL is the only company I already had some network connection to from one Korean conference. ... Actually DHL is great, so I will report back about the developments and my decision.

I'll drop you a message! Even though I'm just seeing you wrote this post already in December. ;-)

Which company did you "end up" at? (This sure will be interesting to others as well...)

Best regards,

Phil

When I was asked by a co-member of KBC for an interview I thought: ok, lets do it quickly and move on with my daily business as usual........

I had within 2 days a good conversation over GoogleChat and very soon the interview was made available on the KBC website. Within a day(!) I was starting receiving many many positive reactions from all over the world. Not only through postings on the KBC website but also through direct emails. Very soon my business emailbox was overloaded!

I never ever had expected so much response from inside and outside the KBC Community. I received several openings for business proposals and was even being asked to provide specific (paid)information on certain topics/subjects according to businesses where I was already involved. The most amazing thing that happened included a certain opening in a business contact/company who refused me many times to accept me as a prospect to do some business together. Suddenly they sended me an email and later on phoned me to ask if it was possible to meet each other. How odd especially if you know that one of the reason I was always rejected was that they wanted only "serious business men" in the meetingroom.....huh?!

To make a long story short.....I enjoyed everything that happened recently and I can recommend other people to make also as much as effort to boost your career/business through KBC.

Hey, that's great Shil! Thanks a lot for sharing!
