Hello!
I have been asked to help out in organizing a small job fair in Montreal for those interested in working in Korea. This job fair was held last year with moderate success: one of the problems encountered was that while there were informational sessions about how to go about getting work, and requirements etc. there were no actual concrete jobs being offered, no company representation and nowhere for participants to actually give their CV. Because it is a small fair, I wouldn't expect companies to be fully present in large numbers, but perhaps there is a middle ground, or way to acheive representation otherwise, say via a middleman? I would really appreciate any advice or help you can offer with this issue. Thanks!

What end of the job spectrum is this fair for?
Any specific industry or career progression?

Is the whole fair for Korea? Or are you just representing the Korea side at a larger fair? I would think you could connect with one or some of the recruiters on KBC to represent them. It shouldn't be hard to collect resumes and forward those of the attendees. English teaching is would be the most straight-forward position to fill. You might check with Jamie Lee over at Korea Connections; there are others though too.
Permalink Reply by Simon Hoggett on January 5, 2012 at 1:54pm Hi Jessica. Sounds interesting for you. Who is the organizer of the job information session and what is their goal?
Permalink Reply by Jennifer B. Fletcher on January 5, 2012 at 11:37pm Thanks for your replies. It will be organized by the Montreal Korea club, whose mandate is to foster awareness of Korea and her culture. So the fair focuses only on Korea, with no specific industry sector targeted. However, I know that many people want information on jobs other than ESL. I believe the clientele will mostly be recent graduates and thus looking for entry level, or perhaps ineternships as well.

Jennifer - I agree that it would be nice to find jobs other than ESL. The challenge is though that positions outside ESL are a lot harder to find. Check out some of the discussions linked t from this page for some perspective: http://www.koreabusinesscentral.com/page/topic-central-get-a-job-in.
Jamie, who posted below, will be an excellent resource for you, I'm sure!

Thanks for letting me know of your expertise. I'm really glad to be in touch with a reputable recruiter. I will definitely be in touch as we get closer to the job fair dates (mid-April).

is your twitter account still active?
And: Did you expand into new / related fields meanwhile with "Korea Connections"?
Permalink Reply by Jennifer B. Fletcher on February 23, 2012 at 1:56am Invitation to represent your company:
Hi all, the job fair is starting to come together. At this point we are seeking company representation, even if they can not be physically present. If your hiring company would like to participate, we will be able to set up a table with some flyers and company information. Volunteers will be manning the tables and can be informed of company and job details on your behalf. If interested, please contact me and please send HR and company info in the form of flyers or posters. We can print things up here if you want to send it by e-mail and if you don't mind black and white handouts, or you can send posters and your own printed flyers by mail. Thank you, I look forward to hearing from you!

The big three(Samsung/LG/Huyndai + KIA) here often look for foreign interns with multiple language skills and would no doubt send you some free material. I would contact the internship offices of each.
You want to to also have some information on hand for e-7,e-5,d-4 visas for working in Korea.
Lastly reach out to Kopra and Kotra (very important). They have a wealth of information to provide as well as internship listings.
Permalink Reply by Jennifer B. Fletcher on February 24, 2012 at 12:17am Hi Nic,
Thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely contact the HR companies and will be focusing more on individuals soon. I have some information already on the internships, and will present this information, however, I was under the impression they only provide interships to those CURRENTLY studying in Korea, do you know if they also hire for interships from abroad?
As for the visas, we will have a rep from the consulate explaining visas and laws governing foreigners.
KOTRA and KOPRA are on my list - thank you!
Hello Jennifer,
I myself am also from Montreal (Concordia JMSB 2011 alumnus). Being a foreinger, I totally understand the issue that you are encountering with the fair organization. I am currently working in Korea for a Taiwan-based cloud computing company's branch office here. Since we are considered SME here in Korea, I take charge of several admin roles including HR. If possible, please kindly elaborate on how I could help you out with the job fair organization. If it is to provide actual openings, I would be happy to do so.
All the best with the preparation!
Kristin
