URGENT- Call for Blood Donation of Type B Rh-negative

Dear Members and Friends,

The KiwiChamber and AustCham Korea joins FKCCI's efforts in calling upon our members and friends to respond to an urgent medical situation, and wish to ask anyone with B Rh-negative blood type to kindly donate platelets.

We thank you for your support and solidarity with our efforts to assist Jeon Yoo-Woon.

Jeon Yoo-Woon, the 19-year old son of an employee at the French chemical company Cray Valley, has been diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer that originates in the immune system and attacks platelets in the blood. Yoo-Woon is currently receiving chemotherapy at Yonsei Severance Hospital and requires platelet transfusions on a regular basis.

Yoo-Woon's blood type is B Rh-negative, which is extremely rare among Koreans.

To show its support and solidarity, the FKCCI wishes to ask anyone with B Rh-negative blood type to kindly donate platelets.

Unfortunately, donations from French and British nationals are not accepted. However, if you know of other potential donors please pass along this message.

For more information on donating, please contact the boy's father, Mr. Jeon Jeong-Woo at 010-5048-7678. (Mr. Jeon speaks English).

You can also contact Mrs. Florence Peyronneau at 010-3662-0840.

Platelet donations draw less than one pint of blood from the arm. The blood is passed through a sophisticated cell-separating machine. The platelets are separated from the blood, which is then returned to the arm along with a small amount of saline solution. The pain associated is similar to receiving a shot.

The FKCCI thanks you for your support and solidarity.

Kent,

Thanks for sharing this with us. I will post a link to this article on my Facebook page, as KBC allows anyone to view and read through our discussions; however, they would not able to contribute comments or discussions until they become a member.

PS: This might have been done already, but I think it would be good to circulate to all the expatriate spouse groups (e.g., American Women's Association, Seoul Expatriate Women's Association, etc -- not sure if I have the correct group names).

I wonder too whether the US military would be interested in helping out? It would be wonderful PR for them (Devin/Ron?)
Update:

"Yoowoon has lost his conscious due to internal hemorrhages and infections. He received cardiac massage and managed to breathe again, and now is in the ICU. Things are not good. We desperately need donors of B- or AB- who meet the requirements for donation. If there is anyone who has not yet stepped forward, please contact us!"
Thanks so much for the support and for spreading the word around.

I am very sorry to say that YooWoon passed on today at 6:00pm. His family will be holding a wake for him at the Yonsei Severence hospital until Thursday at 11:30am. It is Korean tradition to give a bit of money to help the family with expenses, so if you intend to go by, you might want to keep that in mind. I also understand that it is customary to wear black.

Marie
I am very sorry to hear this. May YooWoon rest in peace.
Rest in peace YooWoon.
Here is the article from this morning's Korea Herald:

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and offer our heartfelt condolences on the passing of YooWoon, may he rest in peace. I am very sadden by the news.
Dear Marie thank you for being such a driving force to motivate the expat community into action, I can see from the article in the Korea Times what a significant difference your efforts made.
