I'd like to update the list of books at this page: http://www.koreabusinesscentral.com/page/topic-central-learn-korean

But it's been many years since I studied Korean from a book. At that time, I used the Yonsei textbooks and some other series I don't remember now. Anyway, if I were to make a current list of the three best books or series of books for learning Korean properly (I don't mean phrasebooks, which are a dime a dozen), what would you suggest I put on that list?

I first started with the "한국어" series by Yonsei University and "Korean Grammar for International Learners". I really liked those books because the "한국어" series gives you a lot of good sentence structures to memorize, and "Korean Grammar for International Learners" is a great grammar reference book.

Dear Mr. Hales,

would you still recommend the grammar book and the series, I mean do you (or someone of your friends/family) still use it? How about the one recommended in the "Lean Korean" topic corner (by Byong)? ... and could you please (not for me, but for the other readers) quickly specify or link the ISBN and the other cornerstones of the publications named by you in this thread? Thanks.

In my Korean class we're using: Korean made easy for beginners by Seung-eun Oh
Robert: Thanks for mentioning the book. What are your opinions on it? Is it good?

Have others used this book and thought it good/bad?
Using Korean: a guide to contemporary usage is a book that has become available in the last 2 years which is second to none. It describes all the areas of using Korean that are confusing and has the best NB grammar points which are explained through lots of authentic example sentences (not just about liking Kimchi or the 4 seasons of Korea). Everyone who aspires to reach a proficient level of Korean will benefit from this book.
What's "NB" mean?

Thanks James, I just ordered the book, I'm really curious!

I'm definitely also of the opinion that such books are needed! With a more holistic and practical approach.

Of course I might still look into purchasing the recommended formal grammar book later on, if needed...

I have a blog that I set up to help learners of Korean by providing links and recommendations about the best resources for studying. I've stopped posting on it for the time being but there are lots of posts and that will be very helpful. Have a look here http://koreanasitis.wordpress.com/
James: That blog is a great resource. Thanks! Let me know if you're planning to get it back up and I will definitely add it to our Topic Central: Learning Korean page here: http://www.koreabusinesscentral.com/page/topic-central-learn-korean

Thanks also for the recommendation of Using Korean. I will add it to my list of books to review.

I work at a textbook publishing company here in Seoul. Although my company focuses primarily on English, Chinese, and Japanese textbooks, it has also published quite a few Korean books for non-native speakers learning Korean.

Now, as far as I know, there are few Korean for business books on the market. Perhaps if I show my company that there is adequate demand for a series of Korean for business textbooks, then I might be able to persuade them to publish such a series. Not only that, but I think the members of the learning community here can provide their feedback to produce a series of books that are genuinely helpful for Korean language learners. For example, getting opinions about which topics to cover, what type of learning exercises to include, what type of content should be excluded and so forth can help us create a textbook series that people would really want to learn from.

Any thoughts about this?

...a chapter on "meetings"

I personally enjoy 서강대's books -especially their little "grammar primer" that comes with each book in their series.

...their explanations make sense (to me, at least) & I somehow feel motivated to go apply what I've read (i.e.: it's all practical stuff).
