The book is in-depth and for anyone who wants to become truly accomplished in Korean. If you want to use Korean for little more than simple meet and greet and not get into the heart of the language then you could still do well without it.
If you do not aspire to take your Korean to more than a beginners level, then for you, it could be 'overkill' as you put it.
Permalink Reply by Brijesh on November 20, 2011 at 10:52pm I have found Primsleur Korean Series to be very effective. It is not a book but its an audio-book which makes you practice Korean Phrases and gets you speaking korean in a few days..
Permalink Reply by Brijesh on November 21, 2011 at 1:30pm Yonsei and Ganada books are the best. But there are other books too. I would like to share two links here
Easy Korean by Chad Meyer and Moonjung Kim. Its a very cute but highly insightful book on learning Korean.
The links above will take you to my website from where you can download the 50 page ebook (its an exe made in flash and I assure you its secure) and if you need more pages then you can follow them on twitter or facebook.
Books for learning Korean - has books to help you with day to day conversations.
Permalink Reply by Philipp Grunwald on November 22, 2011 at 10:18am Dear Brijesh,
thanks so much for the recommendations!! The "Easy Korean" illustrations are just pure genius!!
I hope they will sell high-quality e-Books of it in the future! (Because normal books are just too heavy. ;))
"The Korea Guide" website was also new to me...one question again (esp. as I never looked into them):
Why do you think the Yonsei and Ganada book series are the best?
Permalink Reply by Brijesh on December 29, 2011 at 1:52am Dear Philipp,
I wrote the comment - Yonsei and Ganada book series are the best.. not from my personal experience but from what I read about it on other sites. I have not used any of the books above. But yes I use - Easy Korean.
With regards to Easy Korean.. Chad Meyer is in the process of publishing a book. He will be out with his version too but I do not think it would be an e-book. From what I understand it would be released in print first. But the moment it get released I will be putting a post about it on my website - The Korea Guide.
Well, I hope you like the website - The Korea Guide.

For a beginner, on the topic of "real spoken Korean" I recommend "Teach Yourself Korean" (http://www.amazon.com/Yourself-Korean-Complete-Course-Package/dp/00...). Learn to say seemingly stupid things like "I don't need a monkey" or "Really, booze is better than medicine" and you'll never forget how to say ~ 필요 없어요 or "사실, ~이 ~보다 더 좋아" (How they worked the first into a realistic dialogue still amazes me.)
The Sogang U books are quite good, and there is free content on their site of various levels (but limited) http://korean.sogang.ac.kr/
The Yonsei books I don't find the best for a beginner (very dry and vocab-heavy, also very formal for daily life) but once at an intermediate level "Korean Grammar for International Learners" is wonderful. http://www.hanbooks.com/korgramforin.html Translations emphasize "feel" over formality and I "feel" (ha) that makes them more accurate.
Another person mentioned http://www.talktomeinkorean.com/ and I second that 100%.
Finally: www.ezcorean.com -- amazing free resource -- any level.
Hanja:
Neo's Hanja (http://neo_hanja_2003.tripod.com/Neohanjapages/neohanja_main.htm) is free. There's also a Wiki page, http://www.koreanwikiproject.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hanja, but it is far from complete.
A Guide to Korean Characters is a bit limited but good http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Korean-Characters-Reading-Dictionary/dp...
Handbook of Korean Vocabulary is out of print but worth finding http://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Korean-Vocabulary-Recognition-Compre...

Great list! Thanks!
