The Association of the US Army (AUSA) has afforded me the opportunity to meet some of the most fascinating people I could ever have imagined such as a Silver Star recipient who found himself deployed from a cushy job in Tokyo directly into the fury of the earliest days of the Korean War; another genuine hero this time from WWII whom I helped present a Silver Star he earned 65-years prior; an unbelievably upbeat and patriotic US Navy bomber pilot who’d considered himself a lucky man despite having endured a living hell as a POW in the Hanoi Hilton; and among so many others a distinguished former Korean Ambassador whom I was honored to work with for over 10-years who’d incidentally also risen through the ranks to become a General in the ROK Army. A testament to just how small the world is, this very same Dr. Choi and I had both written articles published in the very same magazine one year prior to meeting each other at the Defense Language Institute Korean School where we both taught since the year 2000.
