Chris Lott replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"I want to update what I've learned.  I'm not sure how Roger's situation worked out, but for me it ended up being almost impossible to transfer the partnership to a incorporation (and retain the D-8).  As Roger hinted at,…"

Chris Lott replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"Not to get too far off-topic, but in that discussion, I see mention of a special G-1 visa.  Is this new? In the spring, over a period of about two months, I put together a complete application package for what was then the F2-99 "special…"

Chris Lott replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"Roger, reading between the lines, you seem to be saying that you can't own/operate a business here on an F2.  Is that so?  I question, because I know quite a few F2- visa holders who DO own businesses, presumably legal ones. …"

Chris Lott replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"I can attest that you didn't need a corporation in the past.  I got my D-8 visa in 2008, and our company was just a partnership.  I know a couple of other people who did the same thing.  Especially for small consultant-style…"

Roger Shepherd replied to Jason T. Chun's discussion *** URGENT: D-8 VISA HOLDERS ***
"I am a D8 holder and got my new D9 visa issued today. The procedure was supportive and smooth. This is the best way to go for those that wish to stay as sole proprieter. I only paid the administrative fees - about 65,000W. Thanks to SGBC and KBC for…"

Steven S. Bammel replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"There's a lot of discretion up at immigration on who and when to give visas. Email me if you'd like the contact info for the guy I met up at InvestKorea. If you point out that you already made the investments, perhaps there would be a way…"

"And of course, one wouldn't expect the new changes to apply to current holders as well. Most of the initial capital is now tied up in projects as operating costs. A little unfair I think.   "

Steven S. Bammel replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"Oh, OK. Yeah, the sole proprietorship would be simpler in many ways."

Roger Shepherd replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"Good question. From memory, it was easier to set up a sole proprietorship than a corporation back then."

Steven S. Bammel replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"Oh! OK, then the only difference is that they've increased the capital amount. But with W50 million, why did you set up a sole proprietorship? That money would have served for a full corporation."

Roger Shepherd replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"No, I had to bring foreign investment into Korea, 50,000,000W back then - there was no luck or giving away of anything involved at all."

Steven S. Bammel replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"That's interesting. I remember that they increased the capital requirements about two years ago; I didn't know they were giving E-8 visas away without any capital though before that. I guess you have to feel lucky for what you got and…"

Roger Shepherd replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"Ha ha, yeah it was 2 years ago. To change to a corporation is a process that involves non-guaranteed expense, and legal proceedings. It's all very vague at the moment, and a little too typical for my liking. I'll have to weigh it up.…"

Steven S. Bammel replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"You got a D-8 visa without establishing a corporation and with just a sole proprietorship? I didn't know it could be done. How did you do that? Was it several years ago?"

Roger Shepherd replied to Roger Shepherd's discussion New D8 business visa regulations
"Thanks Steven. I hold a D8 visa, but immigration have moved the goalposts on new applicants including renewals - basically axing the sole proprietorship and forcing them to change into corporations, at more expense, with no…"
